Interesting background story:

In 1980, Frank A. Zuern noticed that bluebirds were nesting within cannons in the Civil War battlefields of Chickamauga, Georgia. Armed with the knowledge that bluebirds are attracted to trees with hollow limbs, he experimented with a horizontal nest box design.

After placing a small amount of nesting material behind the built-baffle, he found that 90% of the birds would nest in the back of the house. Thus, this particular design is particularly resistant to attack from mammalian predators, as well as, sparrows.

Locate the house as you would any other bluebird house. With this particular house, it is recommended that it be mounted on top of a post. Attach a wooden mounting board to the non-opening side of the house. (Note: on side of house which opens, turn “L” hook and side hinges upward.) Extend the mounting board down the side of the post and secure to the post. Metal “L” braces can be utilized to provide additional support if desired.

Alternatively, the house can be mounted on a metal pole or post with a bracket attached to the bottom of the house.
